So long as performed at a furious pace or with a sardonic jeer a banjo solo by a guy donning a waistcoat and tie cuts the edge just as sharply as a full Marshall stack. Consider the Gentlemen a duo from the heart of hipdom Long Island City in Queens N.Y. who wield a high strung fast paced mixture of old time country tin pan alley and vaudevillian swing. Featuring Bean on plectrum banjo and Fuller Condon on standup bass the duo just released its third album Heavy Petting. They swing through Savannah for a show Sunday at the Sentient Bean. The Gentlemen who begin each show by handing out free kazoos landed on their current format when efforts to form a straight rock group ran up against that bane of aspiring rockers everywhere the lack of a drummer. On a whim one day they dressed up carted their instruments to Central Park and started playing. We weren t into this whole kind of music at the time in fact we sounded a bunch different the first time we went out there Bean said. We were a lot more country whereas now we have more of a Dixieland jazz vibe. Answer One of the reasons we got into this kind of music is that we like to write songs about topics and this music is a great vehicle. At first we had written one or two songs about fishing a couple about drinking. But I was always a history buff. We like to write songs about history. And not just about anything but zeroing in on something very specific. We were into this thing about President Taft. His name is really easy to rhyme and he was a very big man. In researching him I also found out he was the last president to wear a mustache and the first president to throw the first pitch at a baseball game. Q How did you get from playing at Central Park to gigging in NYC venues I imagine New York wasn t an easy place to get people into this kind of music. Is that part of why you re on the road so often A Well we were doing all right here. We would do really well in the Park but then when we played in a venue people really wouldn t show up. On the road yes people in North Carolina seemed more open to it. The thing about New York though is that there are so many people. It s really taken until now but we get reliable crowds. When Vince Gill went into the studio with some trusted musical colleagues back in September he intended to assemble another in a long line of first rate albums mixing a little hard core country maybe a bluegrass number or two perhaps a sacred tune. But thanks in part to the Beatles things turned out differently. It s not that he hadn t thought before about undertaking a lengthy exploration of the various musical sides of his creative self. Indeed with an adventurousness rivaling Willie Nelson s he had imagined releasing a bluegrass record a country record a contemporary record and an instrumental record all in a row. But for whatever reason he had never won support for his idea and such a series of different releases was not in the cards as this project got under way. When Gill started in on the new album however something unusual and wonderful began to take shape. For starters his prolific songwriting had given him a body of some forty new songs from which he was to choose or to record a daunting task. Instead of trying to pick the winners on the front end though he simply went to work determined to capture a song a day in the studio.
